Summary of December’s Tournament:
This was a stand alone cup tournament. We played four games against a mixture of Premier and Championship sides, losing the first two matches by 1-0, but came back to win the last two 1-0, meaning we just lost out on a semi-final place by one point.
Squad was: Abbas, Angela, Gareth, John C (GK), Phil, Russell, Steve C and Will
Detailed match reports:
Hurst v Bognor Boulders: (0-1)
Starting Team: Abbas, Angela, John C (GK), Russell, Steve C and Will
This game could have gone either way with several chances at both ends. Steve and Abbas both shot wide or high and John made a great save at his right hand post. Further into the match Hurst had the majority of the ball but just couldn’t make the most of it in front of goal. Generally some great defensive work by Will and Russell but in the last two minutes of the game, Bognor had a free kick and one of their players made a darting ‘run’ from the right to the left of the pitch and they received the ball unmarked and John had no chance with the thunderous shot that went past him (0-1).
Hurst v Portsmouth (0-1)
Starting Team: Gareth, John C (GK), Phil, Russell, Steve C and Will
Hurst kicked off and lost possession immediately. The Portsmouth player went straight down the middle and shot but John had bravely come to the edge of his area and blocked it. A minute later Portsmouth had a corner which they passed to a player just outside the area who shot and another save by John, this time low to his right. John then saved another shot, a thunderous one which he trapped between his legs (or maybe a bit higher as he spoke in a falsetto voice for a few minutes after that!!!). Unfortunately, the Portsmouth attack persisted with a drive through the centre which Hurst failed to close down, and John was unable to stop the shot nestling into the top left of the goal (0-1). The closest Hurst got to evening up the score was from a great tackle by Russell who passed the ball to Gareth who shot just wide of the right-hand side of the goal.
Hurst v Arun Blues: (1-0)
Starting Team: Abbas, Gareth, John C (GK), Phil, Russell, and Will
Maybe because of a two hour wait for this next match, Hurst were very fired up and started the match on the front foot and continued this way through most of the game. Arun Blues did have a couple of shots that John was able to save, but most of the play was in Arun Blues’ half. A decision for Phil to play in the middle (rather than left wing) worked really well as he was able to receive the ball and then lay it off to Russell and Gareth. Hurst had several shots but none on target including Phil’s left foot shot just over the bar. Will and Russell seemed to have a lot of freedom at the back and were able to control the game from there and make some great passes through to Gareth and Abbas. About two thirds of the way through the game, Arun Blues had a rare moment near the goal but Phil had tracked back and stole the ball with a pass back to John who gave it to Gareth, who passed to Abbas who gave it back to Gareth who shot and GOAL 1-0 to Hurst. Hurst then nearly scored again following another shot by Gareth that the keeper parried out to Abbas’ knee and the ball went just wide. Final score 1-0 win to Hurst.
Hurst v Pompey NSG: (1-0)
Team: Gareth, John C (GK), Phil, Russell, Steve C and Will
Fired up from the recent win, Hurst played well from the kick off with several shots including one from Phil whose shot was thwarted by an obvious tackle from behind but somehow the ref didn’t see it. Shortly after, Steve drove down the right, passed back to Russell in the centre who scored with a fabulous shot that ended up in the top left of the net GOAL 1-0 to Hurst. Shortly after the kick off, Steve passed to Phil (still in his infamous centre forward position) who shot just over the bar. Will and Russell in defence were too strong for Pompey NSG with successful tackles, mopping up loose balls and distributing the ball to Gareth and Steve. Will took a free kick and passed to Steve who passed to Gareth who shot just over the bar, Russell then stopped another attack and passed the ball to Phil who passed to Steve whose shot was saved by the keeper. With just a few minutes left, Abbas came on as sub for Phil and made his presence felt up front including making the Pompey NSG keeper make a mistake by rolling the ball out directly into the path of Gareth who shot but it was saved by the keeper. Final score 1-0 to Hurst.
