Monthly over 60s tournament at Worthing Football Club
We played 5 games, winning 2, drawing 2 and losing 1. We ended the Round in jointsecond place. kept our formation in a very disciplined fashion throughout and was reflected in our keeper having to make very few saves and only conceding 1 goal. Some superb passing moves in attack were seen with a good number shots at goal.
An all round good performance.
Matches in summary were:
Hurst v Brighton Bees 0-0
Hurst controlled the match well and denied Bees many shooting opportunities. In attack, we could have created more opportunities and unfortunately did not score.
Hurst v Worthing Whites 0-1
Hurst had most of the game here with occasional Whites attacks. Strong shots from Steve and Will were well saved by Whites keeper. Near the end of the match, Whites were awarded a penalty as our defender was deemed to entered the penalty area. We felt this was a harsh decision given the contact between attacker and defender but respected the referees opinion.
The penalty was duely converted but this was the only breach of our defences through the Tournament.
Hurst v Portsmouth NSG 1-0
A switch of position for Abbas to central midfield was tried for this game. A good decision as we looked very robust defensively with Steve and Gareth linking with Abbas well. Hurst enjoyed most of the possession and spent much of the game in our opponents half. One attack saw Abbas dribble past 2 defenders and fire a powerful shot, only to see it well saved. However, with resulting rebound falling to a Portsmouth player, Steve C tenaciously battled for the ball, dispossessing the opponent and firing home past the keeper.
A well deserved win!
Hurst v Arun Blue 0-0
Keeping Abbas in ce tral position, we again looked very robust defensively with Abbas able to bring Steve and Phil into the gamel. Andy W and Will M looked very good in defence. John was required to stop one shot throughout the game. Despite numerous shots from Steve, Abbas and Brian we could not score and despite having most of the possession the game ended level.
Hurst v Frimley 1-0
We considered Frimley to be the strongest team in the division having been relegated from the Premier Division at the last tournament. However, Frimley were forced onto the back foot early on with their attacks being repelled by Will and Andy. Hurst controlled much of the game with Abbas, Will and Steve passing g the between them very effectively. With 4 minutes left in the game a fierce shot by Gareth could not be held by Frimleys keeper and Abbas was on hand to volley the rebound home. Hurst controlled the remainder of the game with calm and accurate passing.
A superb finish to the day!
We now look forward to round 2 in November.
